I knew music for the soundtrack was going to be a challenge. Over the 28 years I have been skiing, I have noticed that each ski group seems to listen to different styles of music. I really wanted to portray this in the movie. For instance (on the river), slalom skiers mostly listened to classic rock. Barefooters listen to hard rock (you can usually hear them before you see them). Wakeboarders, being the younger generation, listen to more of an edge style as well as rap (I however am allergic to rap), and sky skiers being an unusual sport seemed to always have something unusual on the stereo. Therefore, my goal was to project each sport to the music they seem to gravitate towards.
Luckily, I ran across a gifted musician with a business mind, his name is Matthew JC. I found him performing one afternoon at an outdoor concert in Dallas Alley, sold him on our project and it was on from there. Next thing I know Matt is dragging me through the streets of Deep Ellum in Dallas for two different Music Festivals. From 9pm to 2:30am, five nights straight for each festival, we listened to up to 4 bands per hour. That is where we struck gold, with Fruitcake-Superbeing (sky ski), The Sparrows (woody segment and crash segment), Honey Tongue (women's wakeboard), Black Tie Dynasty (Fog Scene), Slur (Barefoot). My wife met Noelle Lacy (women's slalom) at a ladies game night. Haji (barefoot) was brought to our attention by Evan, one of our sound guys. INXS has been in my head for men's slalom since before we even started production in 2002. Pat Green's song was brought to my attention by a personal friend (Dana), it is the perfect song for our closing credits. After that, it was finding someone to finish out the soundtrack. Matt found Sleeeping Geeenius who were able to create many custom songs in a short amount of time for the Intro, Free Ski, Men's Wakeboard, Acoustic, Surf, and Kid Song segments. Robert Zimmerman closed out the soundtrack with three acoustic songs.
I do not know how many songs/bands I have listened to over the Internet, but it is approaching 1,000.
I am very proud of the music in the movie and plan to release a CD of the soundtrack along with the DVD.
I think you will enjoy it!
